MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST
Contemporary Artist Montreal | Award-Winning Painter & Mixed Media Artist
Montreal contemporary artist Hélène Montpetit creates emotionally charged paintings and mixed media artworks exploring memory, identity, and our collective future. Specializing in acrylics, pastels, and watercolours, this Quebec artist crafts compelling visual narratives designed to provoke thought and inspire action on contemporary global issues.
Artistic Education & Development After a short stint in the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal Fine Arts department, Montpetit shared studio space with fellow self-taught artists, devoting herself to mastering drawing, painting, and textile arts. During this formative period, she created original paintings, batik textiles, and silkscreen works while studying at independent art institutions including the Westmount Visual Arts Centre.
Following a successful decade in communications (2000-2010), collaborating with graphic designers on publications and industry materials, Montpetit returned to fine art around 2020. This career transition allowed her to focus exclusively on painting and drawing, exploring complex themes while perfecting her multi-medium techniques.
Signature Art Series & Artistic Style Montpetit's contemporary artwork spans several distinct creative explorations. Her portrait work and character studies, primarily executed in graphite and pastels, capture the nuanced complexity of human expression with remarkable technical skill.
Her signature series include:
-
Memories, Real and Imagined - This series transforms vintage photographs and personal recollections of 1950s-60s Quebec into expressionist paintings exploring French and English Canadian cultural intersections. These mixed media works demonstrate her mastery of pastels and watercolours in conveying intimate historical narratives.
-
Fudgesicle/Apocalypse - Bold acrylic paintings responding to contemporary global crises, from conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza to extreme weather events. This provocative series asks urgent questions about humanity's role as both destroyer and potential restorer of planetary balance, establishing Montpetit as a significant voice in contemporary social commentary art.
Artistic Approach & Medium Expertise Montpetit approaches each body of work with strategic medium-specific choices: pastels and watercolours for intimate Memory series works, bold acrylics for urgent Fudgesicle/Apocalypse pieces, and graphite with pastels for detailed character studies. This thoughtful approach serves her primary goal of conveying powerful ideas and emotions rather than merely showcasing technical prowess.
Current Work & Exhibitions Currently working on canvas and paper, Montpetit continues to develop bodies of work that bridge personal Quebec history with universal contemporary themes. Her paintings and mixed media works continue to earn recognition in juried competitions and exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I create because I love people. I am a practical idealist who believes important ideas need to be disseminated. My work speaks to integrity, human rights, peace and equity. I stand with artists whose empathy moves them to create meaningful, socially engaged works, but I also like to capture moments of everyday life.
I’m a twin. I grew up in a household of eight, surrounded by a large extended family. I find exploring the human face and form endlessly fascinating. I have done portraits in oil and in acrylics, but I currently favour dry pastels. Opening my box of pastels stirs as much excitement in me as opening a new box of wax crayons did when I was a little girl. When working with watercolours, I do mostly landscapes and florals. I find the medium lends itself to those subjects.
